The Metabolism of Island data system is set up to revolve around a network of contributors who add data, upload images, write text, and in general keep information for "their" island up to date. The goal is to work together to build something that can help to develop research and applications that improve urban sustainability - and that can be freely shared (Creative Commons license applies throughout the site).
Contributing data and information is helpful, useful, and it allows you to learn a great deal about resource flows in your city! Metabolism of Islands is generally interested in any kind of dataset that is related to urban resource flows and stocks. This includes the following:
- Material flow data
Metabolism of Islands is interested in a large number of datasets as long as they pertain to flows of materials. That can include:
- Import into the city or exports out of the city
- Domestic extraction: that means materials that are obtained from nature -- within the city -- and this generally includes (urban) agriculture, forestry, mining, and fishing.
- Output to nature: these are flows that end up in the natural environment, principally revolving around emissions to air, emissions to water, and dissipative flows (e.g. the use of salt on the roads)
- Waste flows
- Recycling flows
- Material stock data
This includes information on material that is present as part of the city's infrastructure or other stock and can include building materials, electronics, etc.
- Infrastructure data
Adding infrastructure information to the system greatly helps everybody to better understand how the city is set up and how the resources flow through the city. This is often done by means of infrastructure that is present, so that is why we are looking for this information. This includes details around the location of the infrastructure and other specifics depending on what it is (e.g. the year it was built, the capacity it has, etc). Infrastructure data could include for instance information on the water infrastructure (dams, reservoirs, treatment works, wastewater treatment plants, etc.), transport (roads, railway stations, airports, etc), and industry-specific infrastructure that impacts resource flows (refineries, power plants, food processing plants, etc).
- Demographic data
Population counts or estimates for the city, preferably broken down by area (e.g. zip code or neighbourhood) and by year.
MultipliCity includes an index with relevant documents for each city, so we are looking for documents including theses, academic publications, government reports, policies, etc.
- Curated resource-specific information
For each resource (from wood to fossil fuels, and from water to iron) we are looking for information written in documents (books, academic articles, government reports, etc.) about the state of this resource in the city. Relevant exerpts should be copied from these documents, referenced, and listed in the profile of the relevant resource.
Either your own photos, or photos that are in the public domain, of resource infrastructure and flows in the city: think of photos where you see waste processing, water provisioning, or food processing.
